Tree that has fallen down from storm

What To Do After a Storm Damages Your Trees

After a storm, it can be hard to know whether a damaged tree is an immediate danger or something that can wait. Here’s a practical guide to what to do in the hours after a storm event:

Stay clear of fallen trees and branches.
A tree that has come down may be caught on a fence, roof or another tree and could shift or spring suddenly if disturbed. Don’t attempt to move it yourself.

Check for power line contact.
If a tree or branch has come down on or near a power line, treat it as live and keep everyone away from the area. Call 000 or Energex on 13 19 62 (24/7 fallen powerline emergency line) before doing anything else.

Assess but don’t touch.
Walk around the affected area from a safe distance to understand the scope of the damage. Look for hanging branches, leaning trees or root movement at the base. Take photos for your insurance claim if applicable.

Call us.
We’ll ask a few questions about the situation, advise on urgency, and get someone out to you. We work across the Gold Coast and can respond quickly after storm events.

Don’t assume a tree is safe because it’s still standing.
Storm damage is often internal. A tree with split heartwood or compromised roots can look fine but come down in the days or weeks after a storm. If in doubt, get it assessed.

Storm Damage and Insurance Claims

If a tree has fallen and caused damage to your property during a storm, your home and contents insurance may cover the cost of removal and repairs. Here’s what to keep in mind:

Document everything before work begins.
Take photos and video of the damage from multiple angles before any work is carried out. Your insurer will need this.

Contact your insurer early.
Let your insurer know about the damage as soon as possible. Most policies require you to notify them promptly after an incident.

We can provide documentation.
We can supply a written quote and job documentation to support your insurance claim. Just let us know when you get in touch and we’ll make sure you have what you need.

Neighbour’s tree onto your property.
If a neighbour’s tree has fallen onto your property, the situation can be more complex. Generally, responsibility depends on whether negligence can be established - if the tree was known to be diseased or dangerous and nothing was done about it. Your insurer can advise on your specific circumstances.

"The Good Wood Co, were very good and knew their wood well. They took on the challenge of completely removing our massive 35-meter-tall Leopard tree. It was a very tricky job because it was encroaching over into three of our neighbours’ properties, but they made it look easy. Craig, Matty and Sophie delivered careful and precise cuts, took an abundance of care not to risk damage to any surrounding property or fences, and left the place tidier than I’ve seen it in years. Nothing left behind, except happy clients. You’d be barking mad to go anywhere else."
